I was invited by a long time work friend, Dave to come and fish the By Brook in Wiltshire. He is a member of a club that runs a stretch of this small stream I would guess about a mile or so long.

Bad news in local fisheries: River Devon and Loch Coulter (updated 7/8/11)
While I was away on holiday at the early part of July I heard of a pollution incident on the River Devon. Allegedly an acid spill by Scottish Water- the company paid to maintain our water supply standards had resulted in significant fish deaths on the upper reaches of the Devon, above Dollar .

First find some fish
One of the secrets of fishing to my mind is first, find some fish. You can have the best cast, the nicest flies, the best tackle, but its all worth nowt if you can’t put the fly near to fish. And I wonder if my recent trouble with Rainbows is down to (partly anyway) not finding fish in the first place. ( I guess you can’t say that with Swanswater- they are right there in front of you)

Another short Midgy session
Another stunning evening, so another chance for a quick hour or so at Pendreich. When I arrived not a fish was to be seen, most entertainment looked to be a photographer who looked to be taking some – ahem, glamour shots with a girl on the far side of the loch. At one stage she was up to her chest in the water wearing a somewhat flimsy dress in the lillypads. I was tempted to go round there and tell her a 27lb pike came out of there last year. The photographer might have got more “snatch” than he envisaged- if you get my drift.

Note to self: Don’t chase Rainbows in Summer
I really fancied a spot of Rainbow bashing and decided to go to Carron Valley and fish from the bank. After the recent MacMillan event I figured I would find fish somewhere and get some sport.
