I guess if you live in Scotland you will not need me to tell you that the weather has been rather Summer-like for most of July ( normally a bit of a wet, mild and grey month) and consequently the fishing has not been the best. Unless you are keen to go depth charging the fish on the deeper Stillwaters like the Lake of Menteith with a Di7 and a couple of Boobies tied on ( not my favourite style of what must be regarded as fly fishing in its “looser ” sense of the term), I suspect many anglers are staying home tying flies, catching some rays, or taking part in other activities until normal service resumes sometime in August probably.
As I type this it is actually tipping it down outside as an unsettled low-pressure system encroaches on the warm air and there is a bit of a thunder and lightning storm taking place. So the lochs and rivers will get a little respite, a little water will flush through the rivers which are on their bones and the lochs will fill up a little and cool down. We aren’t at what anyone would really regard as drought conditions, just unexpectedly seasonal summer weather!
I did venture out late last week just to have a look as much as anything and see how Loch Coulter was faring in the heat. It can be a difficult place at the best of times in Summer, and the Perch can take over a bit, but as it transpired, it was a fairly cool evening up there, it has to be said when I ventured up and went a bit of a walk with my rod in hand. I would be lying to say much fishing took place, it never but I made bit of a VLOG, maybe something I will do more of in future conditions allowing, as it cuts down the amount of typing I need to do as I find it’s aggravating this Tennis Elbow situation I have had now for the best part of ten months. Most things don’t bother it greatly but typing most definitely does. I have tried the voice recognition dictation type of way to do my blogs but frankly, until someone makes software that can cope with the Scottish accent I won’t be making much of a beeline for that unless desperate.
And to crown an otherwise fruitless night, I somehow snapped the tip off my much loved 9 foot 6″ Daiwa New Era. I heard from the factory today ( which isn’t so far from home luckily) and they have a replacement section so not the end of the world but not the best way to end the day.
I doubt I will be out much until either the weather cools or there is some sustained rainfall that gets things fishing again…..but you never know. As I say in the video I have a week off coming in about another three weeks and maybe conditions will have improved, though I cannot tell a lie, I am rather enjoying this pleasant warm spell.
