After such a hot bright day yesterday I took a wander up the River Devon, thinking there would be lots of activity. In fact there was but it was mostly small trout and despite the abundance of flies on the water, from midges to very large Mayflies of some sort, I could not get any real idea of what they were taking.

I arranged back in the winter to have a day out fishing with an old friend from work, we don’t work together now ( not directly at least) but still blether via fB and both being partial to wetting a fly agreed to meet up sometime in the early summer.

On what seems to have been the first true day of Summer, certainly that I have experienced this year, when it was actually warm enough to be out without a jacket on, it would have been sacrilege to have spent the evening sat staring at the box, in the hotel room.

A very, very tough day probably the hardest days fishing I have ever encountered. With in excess of 100 anglers all throwing a line over the water at 09:00, imagining the slap of all those lines hitting the surface to be fished back towards the bank, you could well speculate where the fish would head.

It was far from early summer pleasantness, with a very similar cold wind blowing like home, not sure what direction it was from, not quite got my bearings that far, suspect it was the North East. So after a quick recce decided to have a go for the last hours of the day bearing in mind it was already dank and cloudy and it gets darker earlier down here : considerably earlier!
