With the so called Indian summer apparently here, ( it’s rained at some point, everyday of it here so far )I took the opportunity to grab an afternoon off and head up to Pendreich for what will be the last time this season for me. Two anglers departing as I arrived had had no luck all morning though fish had been moving.
I set up a rod on dries and another with an intermediate line on with nymphs and set out in the boat. The wind was south easterly, an unusual direction , and while not strong it was enough to make things challenging.
On about my third cast I rose a fish to the olive Klinkhammer but it never connected and to be honest that was the sum total of action for the next two and a half hours.
After trying three different areas of the loch on various wets and dries I was close to packing in. There was the odd fish jumping but always somewhere else and I never had a touch.
I upped the anchor and let the boat drift back towards the mooring. Almost on cue the wind dropped and fish started to move. They seemed to be feeding just beneath the surface and I put a Klink on again, this time smaller. Still nothing but the rise was fully underway as I reached the north bank.
One more try! I rowed back, and changed flies again, a size 18 black F Fly and a small black Klink. First cast a fish came to the F Fly but missed. I tried again and at last a take to the tiny CDC fly. I decided to remove the F fly from the dropper and put it on point as a solo fly. About three casts later I had another fish on, this was a heavier fish of about 1lb. Next cast another came and I connected but think I pulled the hook! In fifteen mins I had two and nearly a third. Funny how in ending the season I am back on tiny little flies just like the start.
The heavens then opened and I called it a day, and a season.
It’s been a great year up at Pendreich and I am looking forward already to next year up at the wee loch. A great way to end the official season.
The last fish evading me is fair game, its only fair this great wee loch keeps me wanting for another season- I will be back!

i think i met you in the car park on friday ,have a good one when you go down to wales in nov.
Dave
Yeah, sound like it was me. The fish were being fickle that day hardly got a sniff then they just switched on when the wind dropped. A nice way to end a great season. Might see you round the stockie places or if you fancy a spot of “lady chasing” round the Tweed or the Clyde, drop me a line, I would be willing to share my motor.
hi can anyone fish cocksburn reservoir were can you get a permit.thanks
Hi
Yes you can fish it with a day permit that covers sun rise to 1 hour after sunset ( if I recall). You used to buy them through Country Pursuits in Bridge of Allan and I think also Angling Active ( formerly Stirling Angling Centre). Not sure CP are still doing them, if not they will probably be able to tell you where now. I think it was £15 for a day in 2011 season.
You can only fish during the Brown Trout season and I think there is a 2 fish take limit and no lures rule.
I think the AGM is in a few weeks and will up date the page for the loch details here on the site then.
hi thanks for the info. .its really helpfull
