I needed out for my fishing fix yesterday but the weather was pretty cold and very, very windy in the morning.
With the forecast saying the wind was due to ease as the afternoon wore on, I popped up to the local, Swanswater for a 2 hour ticket on the small ponds. The main loch, Swanswater itself was the colour of tea and quite choppy when I walked past earlier in the day with the dog and there wasn’t a soul out.
So I was hoping for a fun two hours with little or no angling pressure preceding me. You know what hope did………
When I arrived the wind was definitely easing especially down by the ponds and a few more anglers were out. One had just landed a cracking 7lb fish- think it was a Blue Trout up on the main loch on what was described as a Green and Black Fritz but I later learned that I think its a Green and Black Egg laying Blob. (Whats the difference between a “Fritz” and a “Blob”? Answers on a post card please. Is it because a “Fritz” might have a Marabou Tail but then does this not make it a Tadpole? You can tell I am not much of a lure angler!
I had a go down on the Meadow Pond and it too was very murky looking from the rain which had hammered down the night before and was washing through the fishery. Never actually seen the water level so high on the main loch before!
I started with a Viva Style Lure on its own, as the wind was still a little tricky and I didn’t want to tempt fate with a tangle with lots of flies in high winds. I had a “follow” after about 15 mins of this but alas the fish turned away as I came in close. Never seen the actual fish just the wake in the water as it came in and turned.
I wasn’t getting anything though, so went onto Buzzer’s. This got no action either, so after varying depth, changing location and flies, still with no joy I went back onto “pulling patterns” and this time an Intermediate line.T Over the rest of the time I tried blobs, Humungus and mini lure type patterns.
I went all the way round the pond even into the wind but had no reaction or activity to anything I tried. Other than one Perch on a wee black lure. (Does that count)
For the last 20 mins I was back where I started with a Green and Black lure pattern and a beaded blob (Arggggh!) and but for one very sharp tug that did not stick had nothing and I had to console myself with another humiliating blank!
Skunked!
