Spent a few hours on Bank holiday Monday up at Pendreich. It seemed Ok in the shelter of the dam wall but it was very windy and the place was pretty busy too with 7 or 8 anglers on the water. Most had chosen to fish from the dam wall or with the wind from their backs on the South bank so I opted to be obtuse and fished into the wind from the North bank. It wasnt unmanageble using a heavier rod and I covered most of the bank but never seen or touched a fish the entire time. I never seen anyone else get anything either though I know that Willie, who has been fishing a float tube this season got one on a PTN before I arrived.

I left with a second blank to my name just as another friend, Will arrived. I don’t know how he fared but the fish weren’t making themselves known I never seen anything in the book tonight suggesting he had success.

Summer fishing

I currently treat each session fishing like it might be my last for a while at present, so nights like this even if a bit windy are quite special.

Today has been an entirely different picture on the weather front, I guess you could say we had Summer. Probably downhill from here, all the way. ( I shouldn’t joke- its probably true).

I went up this evening hoping for some still, warm conditions and the hope of seeing fish to target on top.

It wasn’t cold but boy was it windy- worse than Monday and Easterly this time which is never a good direction, but the wind was oddly mild. There was though quite a wave, and with the wind coming off my left shoulder on the North bank, I dared try the 4 weaight rod and a small dry fly. I was getting it out Ok and it was fishing fine but there was a dearth of life on top, no insects and no fish showing and I decided this was a rubbish idea. Onto the heavier rod and a trio of bushy wet flies. My Wet Dancer on point, a JC Olive Snatcher on middle dropper, and a UV Dabbler on top dropper, and all on a floating line. To be honest a sink tip might have been better allowing the flies a chance to get under the surface and not get pulled round in the wave but I had left the spool in the car and could not be bothered hobbling back to get it.

Another Big Brown

Another cracker of a Brown, over 2lb and strong as any I have caught- put up a huge fight and still had loads of fight to swim off strongly.Taken on a JC Olive Snatcher.

I just worked my way down the North bank taking a half a dozen casts and then moving down a bit. Not long in and using a pretty fast jerky retreive the line locked up solid and I had a fantastic take from a fish. It put up a brilliant fight, the best I have had in a while, no sooner did I get it on the reel than it was stripping line off again. And it wasn’t a tiddler either. I eventually got it to the net a lovely Brown of about 2-2 and a half pounds. I claimed 2 and a quarter in the catch return but it may have been nearer the half. It had hammered the Olive snatcher but it came out from the fishes scissors easily and it swam off very strongly indeed. Tons of fight still in that one.

That was it really, I fished the entire bank and had a blether with another member there, as it was again quite busy but I never seen any one else catching, though I heard of a fish caught on the South bank this evening too, though never seen it in the returns. I think it was about 2lb as well.

Some good fish being caught, they aren’t easy but they are worth it when you get them.
