I started off well upstream and fishing the French Leader on a pool I know has held a few” ladies of the stream” for me in the past. On my first run through the line tightened with the characteristic thump, thump of a headshaking Grayling and my day was made. It took me a few minutes but it was soon into the net, a fish on the upper side of one and a half to two pounds, a solid female grayling.

It was bright and reasonably mild for the time of year but pretty breezy when I arrived. Though the wind was blowing off the dam wall I decided to fish the north bank which was tricky but not totally unmanageable.

The conditions seemed very similar to last Saturday but that nothing seemed to be moving. Undeterred, I put on the fly that did so well last weekend, a deer hair Comparadun and gave it a few casts up the North bank. One chap coming in on the boat had had a decent session and had caught on small black wets, one like a Butcher, the other something home-made he said. So there were fish about it seemed.

Saturday was the SCAC outing to Frandy. The day started a bit dreich but the forecast was for a warm sunny day and little winds. I don’t know if it is due to the lochs location in a bowl in the hills but it was grey most of the day with the odd light shower and some very changeable and blustery winds which made fishing tricky at times. The wind blew in general towards the dam wall though it would change in the space of two gusts from blowing towards the left end of the dam, to blowing towards the right end.

It’s a call out weekend so fishing choices are limited by phone and pager. I went up to Pendreich on what looked like a perfect fishing afternoon. Breezy enough to create a little wave, bright but not glaringly so, and reasonably warm but not roasting. Surely the fish would be on the top and feeding.
