I started off well upstream and fishing the French Leader on a pool I know has held a few” ladies of the stream” for me in the past. On my first run through the line tightened with the characteristic thump, thump of a headshaking Grayling and my day was made. It took me a few minutes but it was soon into the net, a fish on the upper side of one and a half to two pounds, a solid female grayling.

Before I was even set up James had risen and missed 2 or 3 fish!
It wasn’t long when I started to get some action myself. As the bugs swung round and up on my French Leader and I started to lift I thought I spotted a swirl- or was it just the water vortexing round some rocks? I put the fly in there again, nothing, then once more, this time a take, and a lovely wee summer Grayling of about 25 cms was landed on a pheasant tail nymph.

I decided to visit the Avon today and via facebook contacted Alan Scott, a very enthusiastic club member, to get the info on how the river was fishing, and he very kindly offered to meet me to get me sorted out with a ticket etc. However I was surprised to be offered the “full tour” and Alan very kindly took me to the hatchery, Glengavel Reservoir ( an amazing looking expanse of still water also run and stocked by the club) and showed me some interesting sections of the river to help me get my bearings.

After such a hot bright day yesterday I took a wander up the River Devon, thinking there would be lots of activity. In fact there was but it was mostly small trout and despite the abundance of flies on the water, from midges to very large Mayflies of some sort, I could not get any real idea of what they were taking.
