The garden tasks are waning now and I had a day off Monday for the English Bank Holiday. I had already decided over the weekend I needed to get onto a river but as the day approached I became more and more uncertain where to head. The Tummel? The Clyde? The Carron? The Devon?

Read MoreI went fishing for Grayling, at last, for the first time this “winter”. OK technically it is still most definitely Autumn and depending whether you opt for the meteorological definition or lunar definition, winter is still 3 or nearly 6 weeks away. That didn’t stop Jack Frost visiting overnight Friday and temperatures were as low as -7C in some parts of Scotland, though a balmy -3C here in Stirling when I headed off. Actually it didn’t seem that cold despite what the thermometer said as there was the dripping sound of a slight thaw from the trees around my house.

Several seasons ago, probably eight….where has the time gone? I got a Lamington and District Angling Improvement Association season ticket. I think it was a winter ticket for Grayling. Though I fished the Clyde a few times that year, the weather was particularly cold, and the fishing brutally hard and I never actually made it on to any of the LDAIA water.
