August is trickyI’ve been out three times this past week to Pendreich when the weather has been up to it. On Monday night it looked quite grim but though a bit dark was actually amazingly still, too still for trout fishing you might argue. I missed a solitary attempt at a take on an LTD Sedge, never felt like I touched the fish and it never came back. Could not get a show of interest right down to size 20 midges. Skunked!
Wednesday was more of the same managed to tangle up my leader on my Hardy LRH reel and it took me 30 mins to sort out the ensuing mess! By the time I had and was ready to fish I was down to the last hour of light, if that. In my rush to set up I reckon I made an arse of the knot on my two fly cast. Fishing was hard again with not a breath and other anglers having blanked. I tried a Brown Klink on top with a PTN on the point below, it took a while but I got a sharp tug on the PTN only for the entire line to come flying back at me as the section of tippet tot he point fly snapped below the dropper knot. Pah! Skunked again!
Thursday night was for revenge! The loch was actually pretty busy and fish started moving just after I arrived. I set up as last night on the Klink and dink approach and after a few casts near the boat mooring (the only bit I could squeeze in) noticed the top fly vanish. I thought I was into a fish on the PTN but in fact, it was actually on the Klink! A nice wee 3/4 Brown was returned quickly and I redressed the fly and cast again. This time there was no doubt as a fish hammered the fly from nowhere then tried to get me tangled in the nearby weeds. I was on to its tactic though and managed to keep it clear but it put up a good fight- this was a good fish, and a fish of modest length but very deep proportions was netted- a stunner of a fish about a pound and a quarter. The hook came out easily and he was released, swimming away strongly. So a good night to end a hard week on!
Don’t think there will be much fishing this weekend- have a wedding to attend in the borders, but its a bank holiday weekend in England and my work is closed for it, so have a boat booked at North Third on Monday- looking forward to that.
