Carron Valley is a very big water and at times feels like seeking a needle in a haystack looking for those Rainbows. Or should we be seeking the Wild Brown Trout that also inhabit the water, and are arguably a bit easier to find? And I guess this is the quandary that faces most anglers tackling CV, do you set out to get Rainbows (generally speaking bigger fish) or target the Browns which are on average smaller than their pellet fed relatives.

I was champing at the bit to get out though after all the domestic chores so after work I made haste with my tea and got out to enjoy the longer evenings while the sun was shining. It was a little breezy though and I was a little concerned the wind might be bad up on the hill. It wasn’t as bad as I feared, though it was coming in more or less in an easterly direction which is never great.

I have fished Lake of Menteith for many years, pretty much every year since I returned to fishing, I have been there a couple of times a season at least, and sometimes more.
It’s a place I seem to struggle at, though it isn’t always for the want of hooking fish. That I can do ( usually), getting them to the net can be an altogether different thing though.
