Another cast and this time a fairly hesitant pull that I wasn’t really sure was connected to a fish, though I tightened in all the same and yes, a fish was on. This was where things were very odd- certainly, I haven’t seen anything like this before. So the fish was out on quite a long line and I was pulling it in by hand, it was not as big a Brown Trout as the first.

It is quite amazing how light it is overnight at this time of year and I drove to the loch in partial twilight with clear signs the eastern sky was brightening. It was also remarkably warm and humid. Lots of the local wildlife was caught a little by surprise as I drove, encountering deer on the road and more birds that were forced to take flight from the tarmac. It is also weird how it kind of feels “wrong” making any noise even in the middle of nowhere, while you open or close a gate or door. I found myself creeping around trying to maintain the quiet for no obvious reason.

The longest day arrived and it was about as close to wall to wall sunshine as these days get to be honest. Many years recently, the longest day is marked by rain clouds and no inkling that the sun has either risen or set! I was determined to “celebrate the Solstice on the water and enjoy the longest day….well at least the latter part of it.
