It was fathers day and my lad gave me a cheeky wee bottle of Jura Superstition as he headed out the door to go run a 10K at Bannockburn.
Once back and rested for a few hours we headed out for a rare Father and Son fishing session depite it being very sunny and seemingly getting a bit windy. I’m not really fit for anything too lengthy fishing wise right now but was keen to get out with him so we went up to Swanswater where you can find some shelter from the wind. He isn’t a terribly regular angler so I need to consider his capabilities as my own. Had it been a calm day I might have headed to Coulter and taken him out on a boat as a guest, I could fish longer sitting down, a couple of hours on foot was enough for me just now. I set up his rod and sent him off to the Mill Pond while I gathered the bits and pieces in my rucksack. A few minutes later I hobbled off down to meet up with him ad could see him on the bank, with his rod bent over and the line out like a violin string. Yes his fly was up a tree!
The picture indicates the spot where fish were rising pretty continuously if you could see them even with polaroids on!
With that sorted ( fly lost) we got him somewhere less snag prone and he was off.
I rigged him up on a single bloodworm for openers and myself with a Midas dry fly. However the somewhat blustery wind while creating a nice ripple on the surface was also with the very, very awkward light, meaning I couldn’t see the fly at all. First cast I had an offer but I was so late on the lift in realising I had atake it was off before I connected. A few more casts convinced me there were plenty fish rising but I needed to be able to see things better. They were really hard to see in the ripple but if you watched carefully loads of fish were kissing the surface in a spot which was wid eopen to bright glare. I changed for a Yellow Owl shuttlecock style fly. Fish were rising in one particular spot, well out but in front of me. I had a take and lifted into a fish, it was strong and fought hard. Very hard, on its third run it broke me off!
