I went up to Pendriech for a wee hour and a half last night, seemed like a beautiful evening until you popped your head above the dam wall level where a force 5 Easterly was belting in carrying the North Sea chill with it! But there were a couple of anglers out on the East and North bank, so nothing ventured……
I set up with a Single shuttlecock Buzzer as I could not be bothered managing a team of flies in the wind.
I went up the North bank and bumped into one of the other anglers. He was saying he had had enough with the wind and had only had one knock on a wee mini lure. I cast out and within a few casts saw a fish roll on the surface nearby. Casting over it was quite hard with the wind but I made it and never raised any interest. Two or three more casts, nothing.
I decided to swap to a small brown Klinkhammer- they have been so successful so far for me. While sitting sorting the new fly out the other angler appeared from the East end and said he was packing it in too- again too windy and snagging. You can really only fish the East end dry fly otherwise you will snag reeds all the time. I thought of moving there but decided to get my fly on and cast- at least I knew there was a fish here.
Fly changed- I cast where the fish rolled, waited about 4-5 seconds the fish rose and I was on. Just a wee chap of about half a pound but welcome in the conditions and making it worthwhile. I ventured around the east end and into the bay beyond but never seen a fish move or had any interest, but one released fish in just over an hour, on a night that felt like summer at the North pole- light but freezing, I was happy!
