Yesterday ( and today in fact) was what can only be described as unseasonably stunning. It was like a hot mid summer’s day and it remained warm right late into evening. After dinner it felt like a good evening to have my first evening cast of the year. I decided to pop up to Pendreich at Bridge of Allan, and when I seen the water any hope I had of catching vanished- it was mirror flat, I had a feeling the fish would be not playing. There was, and remained, the odd fish rising throughout the couple of hours I was there, but nothing you could target with any degree of confidence and the majority were well out beyond casting range. I tried from the dam wall but there was nothing close in, then up the north bank where the odd fish would show once in the margins but then wouldn’t move again.

There were clouds of midges everywhere, some of them biting,  which was a bit of a shock this early on in the year. I tried some small dries and a tiny black spider that would fish happily wet or dry but never got so much as a look from a trout.

But it didn’t matter, it was a wonderful quiet evening to be out. There was the odd walker and cyclist that passed but a lot less than say on a mid Summer’s evening and it was great to have it all to myself for the most part even if the fish weren’t up for some sport.
