The longest day arrived and it was about as close to wall to wall sunshine as these days get to be honest. Many years recently, the longest day is marked by rain clouds and no inkling that the sun has either risen or set! I will be keeping this post short and it is likely to be my last for a few weeks. This morning I had to get some of my finger joints injected, the old arthritis continues to do its nasty work and I won’t be able to hold a rod and line I don’t think, for the rest of the week and after, I am away on holidays for a week. I was champing at the bit to get out though after all the domestic chores so after work I made haste with my tea and got out to enjoy the longer evenings while the sun was shining. It was a little breezy though and I was a little concerned the wind might be bad up on the hill. It wasn’t as bad as I feared, though it was coming in more or less in an easterly direction which is never great.

This “proper” summer rolls on and while it has been far from ideal for fishing, to be fair July is rarely the best month anyway. Sometimes I think the old stockmarket maxim of “Sell in May and go away” needs a similar one for fly anglers in Summer, “It’s July, give it a bye” maybe? But two recent outings on the face of it seemed fine days for fishing.
