I will be keeping this post short and it is likely to be my last for a few weeks. This morning I had to get some of my finger joints injected, the old arthritis continues to do its nasty work and I won’t be able to hold a rod and line I don’t think, for the rest of the week and after, I am away on holidays for a week. I am also typing this one-handed- hence the brevity!
Knowing this was likely, and despite it not looking especially settled I headed up to the loch by Bridge of Allan for a cast last night.
There was a stiff wind blowing into my favourite North bank and so I ended up using the 6# rod to give me some power into the wind. But I did keep to a floating line and I think in the end it was the right choice, though I think I only saw one fish move on the surface up to half past nine.
The wind did relent a bit though and it turned out a pleasant night. I had my first fish pretty early on, the one I saw move as I walked up the north bank. I covered the rough area it splashed and I was rewarded with the first of the night.
I wasn’t convinced there were many fish in this spot though so kept moving and after a fair few fly changes and dropping one fish, started getting lots of pulls and follows. At half nine the pulls became takes and in about 30 minutes I netted another four fish, the Fish4Flies Pearly Daddy on point proved effective as well as my own Coulter midge.
By the time it was dark I had netted six and had a kilo-tonne of sport with pulls nips, follows swirls and fish jumping at the flies. Really good fun, that will keep me content until I get home. Most fish were about a pound and a half some probably fairly recent stockies and some looked like they had been in a while. Either way, they put a bend in a rod.
