It was the SCAC club day at Butterstone yesterday. Weather conditions started very like my previous visit with very bright sunshine and little breeze. Good for casting but probably not so good for fishing. The water too was rather murky looking, though close in it looked clear enough.

Frandy Trout Fishery is located just off the Glen Devon Road which runs between Gleneagles and Muckhart. Its a moderately large water I would estimate to be around 150 acres or so being relatively long and narrow with a dogleg shape. This week the plan is to try get out and fish a few places I haven’t been to before. Ideally I would prefer to fish from a boat where I can fish seated as standing and walking are a bit uncomfortable right now. However it wasn’t an option today but I still fancied getting out, so where to go? The only local small Stillwater I have not visited so far is Bowden Springs, so I nipped along the M9 for a few hours catch and release.

The CDC and Deer hair wasn’t getting a reaction and I went down sizes of fly until I got to a size 18 F Fly. This got me a follow it seemed as I retrieved the fly in wet – I never saw the fish but I had an arm wrenching tug and the line pinged from the water, fly less. The 4lb line had snapped at the fly.

I arranged back in the winter to have a day out fishing with an old friend from work, we don’t work together now ( not directly at least) but still blether via fB and both being partial to wetting a fly agreed to meet up sometime in the early summer.
