As its the last day of my holidays I wanted to get out. The day started fair but the wind rose and it got quite grey with low cloud over the hills above Stirling. So Pendreich was out, and my second thought of Orchill would be wet too in all probability. Not been to Burnhouse for a while and it was away from the direction of the rain so I went there for 4 hours C&R.

The CDC and Deer hair wasn’t getting a reaction and I went down sizes of fly until I got to a size 18 F Fly. This got me a follow it seemed as I retrieved the fly in wet – I never saw the fish but I had an arm wrenching tug and the line pinged from the water, fly less. The 4lb line had snapped at the fly.

I knew I was in trouble as I pulled up in the car park with no one on the small ponds and not a single fish showing. I decided on a 2 hour permit on the main loch and tackled up. Speaking to a few anglers it was clear that it was not going to be easy. One chap had been there “all day” and had two fish to show for it plus a few small browns in the evening. It seemed everyone else was blanking (not that it was busy).

It’s been a tough season so far. The weather has been a long way from ideal, seemingly swinging wildly from extremes of cold, to heat and back again, though generally I would say its been colder, windier and wetter than “normal” whatever normal is these days?
