On Friday I took a few hours for a wee walk, upstream of Winchester Avenue on the River Carron for a spot of reconnaissance. Time spent looking is rarely wasted in my view, and arguably is better done without the encumbrance of a fishing rod, and the temptation to fish every likely looking lie along the way. However given the season has started it was too much to ask not to wet some sort of fly so I took my Tenkara rod along with my camera and had a look at the river upstream from where I have fished in the past.

I came across an angler at a pool I have fished just after setting out and we talked for a wee while. He was saying he hadn’t had a touch and hadn’t seen anything move but was hopeful of a wee hatch in the hour coming up. We exchanged anecdotes of the river and went our separate ways. The river gets pretty over grown further up and in early season while it seems pretty accessible I imagine later on it might be hard to get near the water in places. It has me considering getting a cheap short rod for the overhung glides to avoid getting snagged up.

Stone Steps

Not sure if these are man made or have just formed by foot fall, old looking steps on a rock above the river in Carron Glen

I never seen any fish but for one that turned in the pool adjacent to the chap I spoke to above, but there were plenty fishy looking lies. I did throw a wee mymph over the easier to reach spot with the Tenkara outfit though never seen or felt a take unfortunately.

You can see though a lot of displaced material from the winter floods and the odd tree trunk.

Hopefully this week I will get a couple of hours in weather permitting.
