I managed a couple of 4 hour sessions on some local rainbow trout fisheries this week. I wasn’t desperate to go but as my likely opportunities to fish might be limited as this winter wears on I thought I should not look a gift horse in the mouth, and get out. I started off well upstream and fishing the French Leader on a pool I know has held a few” ladies of the stream” for me in the past. On my first run through the line tightened with the characteristic thump, thump of a headshaking Grayling and my day was made. It took me a few minutes but it was soon into the net, a fish on the upper side of one and a half to two pounds, a solid female grayling.

It was bright and reasonably mild for the time of year but pretty breezy when I arrived. Though the wind was blowing off the dam wall I decided to fish the north bank which was tricky but not totally unmanageable.

As I said in my last post activities have been restricted to fly tying recently though I had a spot of treatment this week that hopefully might allow me to get out for a wee while at the weekend, especially Saturday being the last day of the official season. It would be nice to get a last Brownie of the year.
Read MoreNot really up to fishing just now, and the weather is pretty dire anyhow, what with the recent rainfall and pretty high winds here today. I have been gradually building up a few fly boxes hopefully for boat fishing next season. I am concentrating on the wet fly and nymph box just now, taking a bit inspiration from the Hillend Dabbler’s cracking flies and have been watching a few of Davie McPhails You Tube videos to tie a few patterns of his as well as some I have just done myself.
