Before I was even set up James had risen and missed 2 or 3 fish!

It wasn’t long when I started to get some action myself. As the bugs swung round and up on my French Leader and I started to lift I thought I spotted a swirl- or was it just the water vortexing round some rocks? I put the fly in there again, nothing, then once more, this time a take, and a lovely wee summer Grayling of about 25 cms was landed on a pheasant tail nymph.

Coarse In the Vale of Dee

Our cottage is literally 20 yards from the Llangollen canal so I thought I might wet a line in there. I had seen a guy fishing in the canal at Trevor and he was catching on ‘bread punch’ whatever that is with a tiny wee stick float.

Making the best of it

I knew I was in trouble as I pulled up in the car park with no one on the small ponds and not a single fish showing. I decided on a 2 hour permit on the main loch and tackled up. Speaking to a few anglers it was clear that it was not going to be easy. One chap had been there “all day” and had two fish to show for it plus a few small browns in the evening. It seemed everyone else was blanking (not that it was busy).
