Frustration fishing: Swanswater 30th April 2011

It’s been a blowy couple of days and really fly fishing at my usual haunts has been knocked out due to the direction and intensity of this Easterly wind. However it usually drops of an evening and I was “encouraged” by my better half to go out for a couple of hours last night up to my local fishery, Swanswater. The two bottom ponds are pretty sheltered from the wind so should be fishable.

East wind that blows no good: well some!

I was itching to get out yesterday evening, was a cracking day and as the weekend is likely to be blown out got to make the most of opportunities. However, the wind is currently Easterly and that’s not good for fishing up at Pendreich. Aside from the wind, I thought it might be busy with so many on holiday just now. I took a run up mid-afternoon and was surprised there was no one there, though seeing the waves coming across the loch and the wind slamming into the Dam wall, maybe I should not have been.

Bright nights at Swanswater

Was a cracking day yesterday and having the day off was keen to get out for a few hours. I took a run up to Pendriech but it was pretty busy (by its standards) and the wind was blowing right into the dam end. As the most easily fished area was going to be the south bank and most of the anglers were already there I decided to cut my losses and head elsewhere. So I waited a few hours and went up to Swanswater to catch the last of the sun’s rays and hopefully get the evening rise (if there was one).

An Old Firm hat-trick

Well, it’s not gone unnoticed by me that if you want to go fishing at a weekend AND have somewhere to yourself, you can’t do much better than the day of an Old Firm derby, if you live anywhere in the central belt of Scotland. ( I suppose it might be a wee bit different in the East round Edinburgh) but certainly where I am and I would guess more so Glasgow, days when there is a Rangers v Celtic derby on means quiet waters.

Devon day out

I decided to have my first day out on the River Devon, that runs from Glen Devon down to Menstrie.

This was not so much a fishing trip as an exploratory trip as I really don’t know the area at all and am not sure of the best places for access or indeed for fishing, So I worked on the principle that if I started at the most “remote” end and work down I would be doing the right thing. I followed the river up to Castlehill Reservoir and went down to the top bridge on this stretch at Dunning Bridge.
