On call this weekend so can’t venture far. Went up to Pendreich just after 12 thinking the afternoon looked like it was going to brighten up.
As I drove up it got darker and darker and was utterly tipping it down by the time I arrived.
I just had to sit it out until it let up a bit so I could get tackled up.
Wind was still blowing from a nasty direction though not as severly as of late so you could cast off the dam wall. I don’t like fishing here but with the sky looking like it was about to turn black a second time I decided to hang round here in case I needed to make a run for it to the boathouse.
I was fishing a “Wrong midge” and a PTN at this point on sink tip and felt a few nips but no takes. The odd fish was making an appearance and a chap leaving as I arrived said he had got 4 on buzzers fished static.
The rain passed and the buzzers were not setting the heather alight so I swapped to a floating line and a brown Pheasant tail Klink.
About third cast I missed a fish- it was so far out and being on the dam wall, by the time my “strike” reached the fish it had decided the klink was no good, had spat it out and was sat on the bottom having a fag!
I cast again, and his mate decided he was having it- and I was in. A nice wee brownie of about half a pound. Was hooked rather oddly- I got the fly out easily enough but could not get the line away from the fishes scissors. It was as if the line went through the fish. I could not fathom it at all, so I nipped the line off the fly and he swam away.
I decided to move up to the other end of the loch, and fish the weedy area on the dry fly. I managed to miss a couple of very subtle takes but noticed some fish were taking “something” on the surface not just beneath. you could hear the pop of air and the fish that were rising like this were doing so quite aggressively. A black caddis- maybe a Grannom landed on my waders so I decided to try a Davie McPhail style CDC Grannom pattern (what a great fly!) on the surface. First cast rose a fish- I never felt it but seen it too late. I dunno if I touched it at all, but the line ended up in a heap beside me. So the pattern was getting interest. The fish were far from rising freely but I was getting the odd rise to the fly- whether they were coming short or on and off before I could react I dunno, but eventually there was the slightest dimple below my fly- I struck and I had a fish on, another wee fish of about half a pound.
A great wee bit fun for an afternoon. Sorry about the lack of images, I had a few but stupidly deleted them from my iPhone in error instead of transferring them- duh!
The relevance of the title of this post is somewhat lost without the pictures as there were a family of ducks swimming round me later this afternoon and I had a picture!
