After a blowy at times and changeable afternoon at Pendriech on Saturday where I managed a solitary Brown Trout of about a pound on a black drowned Daddy longlegs I decided I needed a change of scene on Sunday and headed off to Bangour ( read my review here) , a new place for me.
Probably it wasn’t the best thing to do weather wise as it was lovely and sunny when I left home but was dull and overcast down at Bangour, and throughout the day heavy downpours intruded on the goings on.
I picked today as it was Rangers v Celtic match day and I have discovered that these days tend to be much quieter round Central Scotland- I guess everyone heads to the pub to watch the game. Good luck to them- I am going fishing!
However, I got to Bangour and it transpired a club had got there before me and were pretty well “hogging” all the most promising platforms. As is there right- they were there first, though I have to say I thought opening time was 09:00 (that’s what it says on the web) but apparently, they opened at 08:45 so had a 20 odd minute head start on any fresh stockies. I was told they had already had a number of fish on lures and I saw a number bent into fish as I signed in.
After acquainting myself with the layout I headed up to the shallower end ( as that was the only free space) and started off on the black daddy I used the day before with a Diawl Bach and a Cruncher for company on an Intermediate line. I was getting nothing though there were some very big fish in the shallows. The club anglers seemed to be having a spree from what I could see. I was picking up a lot of weed and there was a troublesome wind blowing on and off so I swapped to a floating line and put on a big bushy Stimulator on the end with a couple of nymphs/buzzers, washing line style on long droppers. It cast OK but I was still picking up weed on the buzzers so I decided it was time for a move.
I moved near the outflow more in the main basin area, but on the other bank- I think its West!

Second cast I rose a fish on the Stimulator and after a good scrap, it was netted, one of the most colourful Rainbows I have ever had of about 3lbs.
After a few more casts I decided to try a full on dry cast and changed things round to fish an Olive Klinkhammer and a LTD Sedge on point.
I rose a few fish to the Klinkhammer but they were turning away before connecting and the surface sport dried up. To be honest this was the story of the day for me and I don’t think I have ever fished so many different methods, changed lines so often or changed flies so much but other than one half hearted take which again failed to connect fully I got nothing all afternoon even once I moved over tot he other bank near the lodge. Many anglers were bagging up and though I know most we e on olive buzzers, I only had the one show of interest on this myself.
I was looking at my fly patch as I got tidied up at five and I had used about 30 flies! Some sort of record.
No records for fish catching though this time.
