Another weekend, another open day, this time at Angling Active on the edge of Stirling. This is my local tackle shop so it goes without saying I would go have a look.
A number of fishing’s personalities were in attendance though I cannot admit to recognising them all personally, but Hywel Morgan, Ant Glascoe and Scott MacKenzie were the ones I knew without reading a name tag!

The shop seems to be carrying a lot more stock, especially clothing lines, than it used to in the old premises, and the upstairs where all the rods, reels and nets are located has also filled up nicely and seems a bit better organised than before. The tills seemed to be doing a good trade also it has to be said, I guess with the new trout season just days away many anglers are stocking up. Speaking for myself I got a few wee bits and pieces as well as a bottle of ReviveX to reproof my waders- hopefully better than the NikWax stuff I have been using. There were a few deals that caught my eye- the Greys GX700 reel comes with a free Greys Platinum line, and there were some offers on Airflo Boat seats.

There were also fly tying demo’s and casting demo’s, both on the river and in the auction mart hall next door. I watched Hywel do his party piece ( never seen it all the way through before) and it had quite a big audience on a casting pool in the mart. Ant Glascoe too was demo’ing pike lures by Savage Gear. Now speaking as someone who is not really that interested in pike fishing ( would love a proper go on the fly, and would try a lure if someone else wants to let me use their kit!) though dead baiting leaves me ( and the bait) cold. However watching these modern realistic fish lures in the lure tank was amazing. These things are to my mind hyper realistic! All thats missing is a fake blood capsule to give off the impression of a wounded fish! No doubt that type of thing is next! There was a raffle for some cool prizes including £100 voucher for the store and fishing days for salmon on the Teith, entry for simply being there. Worth going for in itself. The Wychwood draw for the New York State fishing was there too with free entry.
