Last night seemed nice enough so I wandered up to Pendreich for a couple of hours. It was quiet and a bit breezy but the breeze was blowing off the North West so made casting easy and it was not cold. As recently, I never seen a solitary fish move until well after nine as the sun was setting. The wind dropped and I expected the fish to start rising, but they never. One was near the boat mooring and I moved to cover it, keeping bac from the edge and the gin clear water. I kept down and changed flies and in typical fashion the fish vanished not showing again.
It wasn’t until about 10 that fish started to rise – less than last week and again well out- a good 50 metres from the bank. No chance. All that were biting were the midges, and believe me there were tons of them, I had to go get the Avon Skin so soft out the car which helped a bit!
Today was mild, even a bit warm and broken cloud with a hint of a breeze. Surely good conditions for another crack at it. Encouragingly there were fish rising near the North bank and though the wind was in to the bank it was gentle and if anything helped straighten my long leader and two dry fly cast out.
First brown trout in weeks from Pendreich on a Yellow Owl
I fished for a while with nothing then out the blue a fish had a very odd go at my olive Klinkhammer on dropper and I missed it. it sort of came at it side on and I mistimed the take completely. I did sting it though so knew it would not return. I fished on and missed a second, very very subtle take on a Shuttlecock Buzzer so changed to a fresh one and tried again, eventually it happened, a fish took the Yellow Owl and it was netted, a fish around 1lb in weight, Words can’t express the relief! The wind turned the temperature dropped then while talking to another angler with a canoe, my pager went- time to go.
