After the disappointment of the river conditions on Saturday I was keen to head out for a couple of hours in the relatively bright weather of Sunday, albeit a little blustery at times. We fished this short but hopeful corner for a while with no sign of fish. Then took a walk upstream, where we found other anglers in the competition. They too had nothing. We started discussing how a single fish might win. John knew a few of the other anglers as Scottish team members…. “they will find fish” he said confidently.

I am on call this weekend so as a rule, except in summer when I can fish the club water at Pendreich and can leave any time, I don’t fish. The risk of the pager going off just after I have bought a permit and set up my gear is too high. However this weekend I was encouraged to take a chance and go out, by my wife.

Continuing on my recent attempts to have a few Traditional Wet Flies in my box for the new season I have tied a few more. Wouldn’t claim them to be brilliant but these are the best of the bunch so worth a mention here and I welcome any comments on how to improve my tying. I have to admit I probably don’t have the best winging material to hand and am not very good at getting either the shape or size of the wing either. But hopefully the fish won’t care!

I had one knock on this almost right away but Jim was into his second fish on the Humungous- obviously the pattern to be on. He very kindly came over and gave me one, very similar to ones I have of my own but tied with holographic gold fritz for the body.
