Continuing on my recent attempts to have a few Traditional Wet Flies in my box for the new season I have tied a few more. Wouldn’t claim them to be brilliant but these are the best of the bunch so worth a mention here and I welcome any comments on how to improve my tying. I have to admit I probably don’t have the best winging material to hand and am not very good at getting either the shape or size of the wing either. But hopefully the fish won’t care!
The March Brown
I followed Davie McPhails YouTube video for this one, though never had the right material for the wing- I think he used Some sort of Hen Pheasant feather ( not a tail) . I had some Hen Pheaasnt feathers here- they were not centre tail feathers and one side of the quill looked pretty “wingy” so I used a pair to get my wings. Not as nice as Davie’s but then he was fairly relaxed about the material to use himself as he mentioned about three or four alternatives to Pheasant. Colour wise its close enough for me. And Anyway isn’t that the thing about fly tying, whatever you tie won’t ever be 100% like anyone elses pattern and one day that might be the difference.
March Brown sizes 8-12 were tied.

I followed the instructions in the “Fly Tying Bible” by Peter Gathercole. I did not have quite the right body material for this (Yellow Seals fur) so used a light olive SLF and I think it looks OK. Otherwise pretty much as shown in the book though obviously not as good.
