For a long time I have found that John Emerson’s CDC dry fly ( colloquially known as the Shit fly) has been a hugely effective fly for the Browns at Pendreich. I have bought these from John at Uniqueflies because I struggled with tying such small flies and could not get the split wing right. I bought some Semperfli Nano Silk recently and this helps hugely both in terms of how strong it is but how much easier 12/0 thread makes tying such small flies.

The weather has been appalling, but I am supposed to be heading to the River Teviot on Saturday for the annual Grayling competition ( I am seriously doubting this will happen with all the rain) but needed to get some flies made up to replenish losses, and add to my arsenal.

Like lots of anglers I have a number of Shuttlecock Buzzers tied and in my fly box. Its a great wee fly- provided you can get the balance right between the hook and the tuft of CDC that suspends the body just in or below the surface film. The fly though has two problems for me.
If you catch on it it gets all greased up and its hard to keep it fishing well after a fish.
it’s not a particularly good fly to act as a sighting fly when fishing buzzers below- it tends to get dragged under then become waterlogged.
This fly has been a brilliant wee pattern but unfortunately, I only have three and they are way smaller than I am currently capable of tying myself.
