Had my first outing of the year on the wee burn today, thinking it looked quite nice and there would be some reasonable height of water with recent rains. While the later judgement was correct, the former was miles out, it was really very cold, especially given we are nearly into May.

Saturday was the Annan Fishery Board, Grayling fishing day. The day is set up as a survey of the river primarily for Sea Trout but also other species, and anglers are offered fishing on one of a number of beats in return for a donation to the Celtic Sea Trout survey.

We fished this short but hopeful corner for a while with no sign of fish. Then took a walk upstream, where we found other anglers in the competition. They too had nothing. We started discussing how a single fish might win. John knew a few of the other anglers as Scottish team members…. “they will find fish” he said confidently.

The weather has been appalling, but I am supposed to be heading to the River Teviot on Saturday for the annual Grayling competition ( I am seriously doubting this will happen with all the rain) but needed to get some flies made up to replenish losses, and add to my arsenal.
