I went off for a couple of hours fishing. There were fish rising all over the loch and on a small brown Klinkhammer I rose a fish but it wasn’t taking. Losing the fly on some snag, I tried again, this time another fish refused and again I was snagged losing a second fly!
I moved down the bank and changed to a small (18) black midge pattern but not before I dropped one in the grass- three flies down!
This is a fairly new location for trout fishing in Central Scotland, opening I believe in 2011. Located in Torwood, near Larbert it consists of two ponds, the larger of which is fly only, the smaller, fly and bait fishing. With a few years under its belt the fishery is now well established among local anglers and features in the catch reports of local newspapers. On a recent visit it was apparent that the fishery has a loyal and regular custom. The lady who runs the place, I beleive her name is Marika, is very welcoming and always offering anglers cups of tea and coffee.

On the principle that if you can’t beat them, join them I have tied a few Snatchers for my next outing to Pendreich. As far as I can tell these style flies are usually tied in 10-14’s but I have an excessive amount of size 16 Buzzer hooks, and being of the mindset that up at the loch, smaller is better, I have tied these in 16’s. So quite small and fiddly but compared to those Barry ties, he was using size 18 and 20’s for some of his Snatcher fishing!

Had a couple of hours up at Pendreich Saturday, the weather man reported it was to be a lovely day but it was damp and misty for most of the day with a little sun eeking out later in the afternoon, though it could never be considered warm. Sub-Saharan Africa need not feel threatened by the temperature here yet then, despite the rubbish in the news.
