For a long time I have found that John Emerson’s CDC dry fly ( colloquially known as the Shit fly) has been a hugely effective fly for the Browns at Pendreich. I have bought these from John at Uniqueflies because I struggled with tying such small flies and could not get the split wing right. I bought some Semperfli Nano Silk recently and this helps hugely both in terms of how strong it is but how much easier 12/0 thread makes tying such small flies.

On the principle that if you can’t beat them, join them I have tied a few Snatchers for my next outing to Pendreich. As far as I can tell these style flies are usually tied in 10-14’s but I have an excessive amount of size 16 Buzzer hooks, and being of the mindset that up at the loch, smaller is better, I have tied these in 16’s. So quite small and fiddly but compared to those Barry ties, he was using size 18 and 20’s for some of his Snatcher fishing!

Saturday was the Annan Fishery Board, Grayling fishing day. The day is set up as a survey of the river primarily for Sea Trout but also other species, and anglers are offered fishing on one of a number of beats in return for a donation to the Celtic Sea Trout survey.
